Soon enough, your child will be coming home talking about the Daily 5.Please continue reading to learn about this wonderful literacy program!
Essentially, the Daily 5 provides a way for me, your child’s teacher, to structure literacy time to increase student independence and allow for individualized attention in small groups and one-on-one.It gives children the skills needed to create a lifetime love of reading and writing.
The Daily 5 is a student-driven system designed to fully engage students in both reading and writing. The five literacy tasks that will be introduced individually are:
Read to Self
Work on Writing
Read to Someone
Listen to Reading
Word Work
When introduced to each task, the children discuss what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like to engage in the task independently. Then, the children work on building their stamina until they are successful at being independent while doing that task.
The program includes whole group focus lessons for our language arts curriculum and independent work time. During the work time, students choose from the five literacy tasks discussed above while I meet with small groups or confer with individual students.
The Daily 5 uses the acronym CAFÉ. This stands for the following:
Comprehension (understanding the decoded words) Students learn new comprehension strategies every week.
Accuracy (decoding words) Students learn new decoding and word recognition skills.
Fluency(comprehension plus reading accurately with expression) Students discover the importance of fluency through class read-alouds. They also will have the opportunity to listen to fluent readers during the Listen to Reading portion of the Daily Five.
Expand Vocabulary (knowing, finding, and using interesting words in both spoken and written language) Students are introduced to a wide variety of age-appropriate vocabulary terms.
Ask your child about Daily 5 and see what they have to say!My guess is that your child will tell you about the class stamina and how we are working toward independence, and maybe you will even hear some of the fantastic things your child has written, read, or listened to during our Daily 5 time.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.Thank you for your continued support!
