Kindergarten is a fun, exciting, and, yes, challenging time in every child’s life. Kindergarten is full of new friends, a new schedule, a new school, a new teacher, and new rules.
Our school has implemented a school-wide positive behavior plan called Take 5 Expectations. These are:
Be there, be ready!
Be responsible!
Be respectful!
Follow directions!
Keep personal space!
Our classroom’s color chart is based on these Take 5 Expectations.
PINK WOW Work: The top level! This level is reached when a student made excellent choices throughout the day. This level is difficult to achieve. When a student reaches this level, they earn a WOW Tag and a cheer from the class.
PURPLE Magnificent Work: This level is reached when a student has made many good choices throughout the day.
BLUE Great Work: This level is reached when a student has made several good choices throughout the day.
GREEN Ready to Learn: Everyone starts each day on green. Most days, students will be on green the entire day. Please note that being on green is NOT a negative thing. Just like earning Blue, Purple, or Pink, it is something to celebrate and be proud of!
YELLOW SlowDown and Make Better Choices: This level is reached when a student makes a poor choice after several verbal warnings/reminders. This is a warning only.
ORANGE Parent Contact: This level is reached when a student continues to make poor choices after more verbal warnings/reminders. Consequences include, but are not limited to, loss of recess time and parent contact.
RED Visit to Office and Parent Contact: This level is reached when a student continues to make poor choices after verbal warnings/reminders OR if the student is intentionally destructive to property or aggressive to other students/adults. If this occurs, the student will be referred to the office. Consequences include, but are not limited to, loss of recess time and parent contact.
Children can earn Blue (Great Work), Purple (Magnificent Work), or Pink (WOW Work) on the color chart by consistently demonstrating our Take 5 Expectations. When any child earns Pink (WOW Work), they will earn a corresponding WOW tag and the class will give them a supportive cheer!
If a child’s name is moved to Yellow, Orange, or Red for not following one or more of our Take 5 Expectations, that child can earn being moved back to Green, Blue, Purple, or Pink by demonstrating good choices and by following our classroom rules.
Every child will receive a monthly calendar to be kept in their Homework Folder. Each day will be colored in on the calendar to show which color they earned that day. Please do not remove the calendar from your child’s Homework Folder. I will replace it with a new one at the start of each month. I will be keeping my own log of each child’s day.
I will send home a letter if your child reaches Orange or Red on any given day. The letter will explain why your child reached Orange or Red. Please use that information to discuss with your child why following our classroom rules is critical. Please sign the form and return it to me the following day in your child’s Homework Folder. Please let me know if you’d like a copy.
Because I believe in rewarding good choices, I will also send home a letter every time your child earns Pink! This is a great opportunity to celebrate your child’s accomplishment! Please sign the form and return it to me the following day in your child’s Homework Folder. Please let me know if you’d like a copy.
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns. You can call me at the school, text me using Remind (ask me for your personalized code to join for free), or email me at [email protected]. Thank you for your support!
